The challenge

Student communities trade constantly — textbooks, equipment, housing handovers, freelance work — but the trading happens across group chats and noticeboards where nothing is searchable and nobody knows who they are dealing with. The problem is not listing items; it is making a stranger feel safe enough to complete a transaction.

Our approach

We treated trust as the product. Identity verification, clear seller history and a structured listing flow came before any growth feature, because a marketplace that feels unsafe never reaches the point where growth matters. Search and categories were designed around how students actually describe what they need rather than around a generic commerce taxonomy.

The constraints

Students are price-sensitive and mostly on mid-range Android phones over patchy mobile data, so the whole thing had to stay fast on a slow connection. That ruled out a heavy client-side app and pushed the listing and search flows to render on the server.

What we built

  • Verified accounts with a lightweight identity check at signup
  • Structured listings with category-aware fields, so a room and a textbook ask for different things
  • Search and filtering tuned to campus vocabulary rather than generic commerce categories
  • In-platform messaging that keeps negotiation attached to the listing it belongs to
  • Payment handling with a clear record on both sides of a trade
  • A moderation surface for reviewing reports without leaving the admin view
